Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Viscosupplementation

FDA-approved. Supported by evidence.

Viscosupplementation therapy at Rejuven Joint Care is a procedure involving the injection of gel-like substances (HA) into a joint to supplement the viscous properties of joint fluid and to reintroduce a component that naturally occurs in the body, but is lost over time in association with osteoarthritis. Many research studies have shown this procedure to be highly successful in alleviating pain associated with osteoarthritis and is covered by most major medical insurance providers, including Medicare FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITS ONLY. The first type of natural knee injection was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001.

HA-Key Points to Remember

  • HA is a naturally-occurring substance in the body.
  • Unlike corticosteroid injections (aka, ‘steroid’ or ‘cortisone’), HA takes effect over about 4-6 weeks.
  • HA injections can create an initial inflammatory response, and the HA is not mixed with any anesthetic as corticosteroids often are. The result is that, for a few days, you may experience either no effect or a slight increase in the discomfort of the joint. This usually starts to subside after a few days.
  • After HA injection, we recommend that you decrease your activity for a few days if possible and, on the injection day, take a dose of acetaminophen (active ingredient in Tylenol ©) if you can take it based on your allergies and other medications. Also, ice packs up to 15 minutes per hour may help alleviate discomfort.
