So, What's the Big Deal with Gel Injections Anyway?

Does it Work...Really?

The Success of Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Knee Osteoarthritis at Rejuven Joint Care

Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. As the cartilage in the knee joint wears down, the bones begin to rub against each other, leading to discomfort and inflammation. While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, various treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. One of the most effective non-surgical treatments offered at Rejuven Joint Care is intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injections. These injections have shown remarkable success in reducing knee pain and enhancing joint function for our patients.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and How Does It Work?

HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid of healthy joints. It acts as a lubricant and helps ‘re-educate’ the cells that produce joint fluid to produce thicker, healthier fluid like they did when you were young.  This helps maintain smooth joint movement and reduce friction between bones. However, in people with knee osteoarthritis, the levels of HA decrease, leading to increased stiffness, inflammation, and pain.

Intra-articular injections of HA aim to restore the joint’s natural lubrication, providing much-needed cushioning and reducing the symptoms of osteoarthritis. By supplementing the knee with HA, patients can experience improved mobility, decreased pain, and a better quality of life.

The Success of HA Injections at Rejuven Joint Care

At Rejuven Joint Care, we have seen firsthand the positive impact that HA injections can have on patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Many individuals who have struggled with pain for years have found relief through this minimally invasive treatment. Here’s why our patients continue to choose HA injections:

1. Proven Pain Relief

One of the biggest reasons patients seek HA injections is the significant reduction in knee pain. HA was first introduced in the 1960’s and has had hundreds of research studies on its effectiveness.  There have been tens of millions of doses given for the treatment of knee arthritis worldwide since that time.

Many individuals report noticeable improvements within three to four weeks of treatment. The pain-relieving effects can last for several months, making it an excellent option for those looking to delay or avoid knee surgery.

2. Enhanced Joint Function and Mobility

Many patients at Rejuven Joint Care have experienced improved joint function and increased mobility following HA injections. As the injected HA restores lubrication in the knee joint, movement becomes smoother and less painful. This allows patients to return to daily activities with greater ease.

3. Alternative to Surgery

For individuals who want to avoid or delay knee replacement surgery, HA injections offer a non-surgical alternative. While knee replacement may eventually be necessary for some, HA injections provide a less invasive option that can help manage symptoms for an extended period.

4. Minimal Side Effects and Quick Recovery

HA injections are well-tolerated, with minimal side effects. Developed originally in the 1960’s, HA treatment for arthritis is nothing new; there have been tens of millions of doses given worldwide since that time.  At Rejuven Joint Care, our experienced medical professionals ensure the procedure is performed safely and effectively. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.

5. Customized Treatment Plans

We understand that each patient’s osteoarthritis journey is unique. That’s why we take a personalized approach to treatment, evaluating the severity of your condition and recommending the best course of action. For some, HA injections alone may provide sufficient relief, while others may benefit from a combination of therapies, such as at-home physical therapy or lifestyle modifications.

What to Expect During the Procedure

At Rejuven Joint Care, the evaluation process is simple and straightforward:

Free Information Appointment: We ask potential patients to visit our clinic for this appointment to learn about the process and get all of their questions answered with a member of our office staff.  It is important that you understand the process, what we offer, and feel comfortable with our approach.

First Medical Appointment: Our medical provider evaluates your knee condition and discusses whether HA injections are the right option for you.

Injection Series: The HA is administered into the knee joint in a series of injections, typically one week apart, using low-dose fluoroscopic guidance for the ultimate precision.  This ensures that the medication reaches the joint capsule (where arthritis resides) every time. Prior to each injection, the knee area is cleaned, and a local anesthetic is applied to minimize discomfort. Most series of injections range from three to five injections per knee.

Post-Treatment Follow Up: Approximately 3-4 weeks after the last injection, we re-assess your progress and compare your pain and function to that of before your treatment using well-documented physical exam and survey methods.

Repeat: The effects of HA injections are long-lasting, but not permanent. We recommend repeating treatment every 6 months to maintain your results. Most insurances will support this treatment for your knees every 6 months.

Is HA Therapy Right for You?

If you suffer from knee osteoarthritis and are looking for a non-surgical treatment option that can relieve pain and improve mobility, HA injections could be the solution. At Rejuven Joint Care, we are committed to helping our patients find the most effective treatment for their specific needs.
